The incident took place in New Haven around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22 on Hallock Avenue.

When officers responded to a report of gunfire they located Tiquentes Graybrown, age unknown, in front of his New Haven home, armed with a handgun, said New Haven Police Capt. Rose Bell.

Beside Graybrown was a 14-year-old juvenile that he had detained.

Graybrown told officers he was called by his neighbor and notified that two kids were inside his car. He went outside, yelled at the kids and they took off. Graybrown chased them both, Bell said.

One ran across the park towards Howard Avenue and the other jumped a white picket fence into the backyard of a house on 6th Street. In the yard, Graybrown confronted the juvenile and told him to stop running, because he had nowhere to go, police said.

The juvenile reached into his pocket and turned towards Graybrown. Believing the juvenile had a weapon, Graybrown took out his gun and fired one round at him, Bell said,

The juvenile was not struck and then put his hands up and surrendered to Graybrown. Graybrown searched him and found a baby monitor that had been in his car, police added.

Officers examined Graybrown’s vehicle and found the rear driver-side window was broken and the steering column was damaged. A records check indicated that Graybrown had a valid pistol permit, Bell said.

Graybrown is employed as a security officer for the New Haven Board of Education.

He was arrested and charged:

  • Criminal attempt to commit assault
  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm
  • Risk of injury to a minor
  • Reckless endangerment

The juvenile was issued a summons for a criminal attempt to commit larceny.
